Kawasaki ZRX 1200R (2002) — Owner & DIY Reference
A comprehensive working reference for the 2002 Kawasaki ZRX 1200R — model code ZR1200-A2, the second year of Kawasaki's retro-styled muscle naked that ran from 2001 to 2007 (Europe; US-market 2001–2005; Japan 2001–2008 carbureted, then ZRX1200 DAEG 2009–2016). The ZRX 1200R is powered by a 1,164 cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four with four Keihin CVK36 carburetors, K-TRIC digital ignition, a five-speed gearbox, and chain final drive. It is the semi-faired "R" variant with a bikini fairing, distinguished from the fully-faired touring-oriented ZRX 1200S.

What Makes the 2002 ZRX 1200R Special
- Eddie Lawson Replica lineage: the ZRX line descends directly from the ZRX 1100, itself an homage to the Kawasaki KZ1000R "Eddie Lawson Replica" superbike. The bikini fairing, round headlight, and muscular tank silhouette are deliberate callbacks.
- Retro-muscle class: alongside the Yamaha XJR1300 and Suzuki GSX1400, the ZRX 1200R was one of the definitive early-2000s big-bore UJM nakeds — fast, comfortable, and mechanically straightforward.
- K-TRIC ignition: Kawasaki Throttle Responsive Ignition Control varies timing by throttle position and rpm, giving crisp low-speed response uncommon in carbureted bikes of this era.
- Proven ZZR-derived engine: the 1,164 cc inline-four traces its lineage to the ZZR 1100 / ZX-11 motor, bored and stroked, and is known for strong midrange torque and long-service reliability.
- Fully adjustable suspension: 43 mm cartridge fork with preload, compression, and rebound adjustment; rear shock with preload and rebound adjustment.
- Powerful brakes: dual 310 mm floating front discs with six-piston Tokico calipers.
Identity, at a glance: 1,164 cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four, 4 valves/cyl · carbureted (4× Keihin CVK36 with K-TRIC) · 5-speed manual · chain final drive · tubular steel double-cradle frame · bikini fairing ("R"). Kawasaki model code ZR1200-A2.

How to Use These Docs
- Start here for the headline numbers, then drill into the system file you need from the Documentation Index.
- Each system file (when written) will be self-contained and end with its own Sources and ⚠️ Items to Verify sections, so you can see exactly what is corroborated versus what still needs confirmation.
- Spec values, capacities, torque figures, service intervals, and part numbers are given in tables; tips, procedures, and cautions are given in bullet lists.
Units & Conventions
- Dual units everywhere. Every measurement is given in metric and imperial, e.g. "108 N·m (80 ft·lb)", "3.5 L (3.7 US qt)". US units are the primary imperial system.
- The ⚠️ flag marks any value that could not be confidently verified against an authoritative source — typically because sources disagree or the figure is single-source. A flagged value is still the best available estimate; it is not invented. Always confirm flagged values against the factory service manual before relying on them.
- Cross-references between files use relative Markdown links.
Disclaimer
This documentation set is a community/owner reference compiled from public sources (forums, spec databases, parts catalogs, and review excerpts) and is not a substitute for the Kawasaki factory service manual.
- Always confirm critical values — torque, fluid types/capacities, valve clearances, brake hydraulic procedures, electrical ratings — against the Kawasaki ZRX 1200R factory service manual (part of the ZR1200 service manual) for your exact model year before wrenching.
- Brakes, clutch, fuel, and electrical work carry real safety risk. If you are unsure, consult a qualified Kawasaki technician.
- Use the correct tools and observe all safety precautions. The authors of these notes accept no liability for damage or injury resulting from their use.
Audit
A full proofreading audit of the entire VehicleSpecs repository (all vehicles) is maintained in Audit.md — cross-file contradictions, wrong values, ambiguities, unverified items, and structural issues are cataloged there with resolution status.

⚠️ Items to Verify
- Power output — quoted as ≈ 122 hp / 89 kW @ 8,500 rpm; some sources list 120 hp or 124 hp. Confirm against the factory service manual.
- Rear tire size — most sources list 180/55 ZR17 but some list 180/60 ZR17. Confirm on the tire placard / service manual.
- Curb weight — dry weight (223 kg / 492 lb) is well corroborated; curb/wet weight ≈ 247 kg (545 lb) per Wikipedia. Confirm against the factory service manual.
- Oil capacity — sources vary between 3.0 L and 3.8 L with filter; 3.8 L is cited by whitedogbikes. Confirm against the service manual.
- Coolant capacity — cited as ≈ 3.0 L; confirm against the service manual.
- Top speed — 246 km/h (153 mph) is from spec databases; real-world top speed may be lower. Treat as optimistic.
- Electrical — battery spec (12 V, size/Ah) and alternator output (wattage) are not confirmed from authoritative sources.
- Each linked sibling file (when written) will carry its own, more detailed ⚠️ Items to Verify list.
