Wear Parts & Consumables

This is the shopping-list reference for the 2000 Honda GL1500 SE Gold Wing: every fluid, filter, seal, washer, and wear part that gets replaced on a schedule or by condition, with part numbers, specs, quantities, and intervals in one place. It is a consolidation of the per-system files. Where a value is discussed in more depth elsewhere, the linked file is the authority, and intervals follow Maintenance Schedule, Fluids & Capacities.

Part numbers: Honda supersedes part numbers over time, and a few of the numbers below are single-source. Always confirm by VIN on a live OEM fiche (Partzilla / CMSNL / Cyclemax / GoldwingParts) before ordering. Anything not fully verified is flagged ⚠️.

2. Fluids & Lubricants

2.1 Engine oil

Item Spec
Capacity, drain only 3.5 L (3.7 US qt, 3.1 Imp qt)
Capacity, oil + filter ⚠️ ≈ 3.7 L (≈ 3.9 US qt). Fill by the sight glass / dipstick, not by volume.
Viscosity SAE 10W-40 (per the manual's temperature chart)
Grade API SE/SF/SG or higher; JASO MA/MA2 motorcycle oil for the wet clutch
Avoid Automotive "energy conserving" / friction-modified oils (clutch slip)
Interval 12 mo / 12,000 km (8,000 mi); more often for short trips or cold climates
Drain bolt torque 35 N·m (25 ft·lb), new washer

The engine oil also lubricates the clutch, transmission, and electric reverse. Shared sump, so oil quality matters more than on a car.

2.2 Coolant

Item Spec
Capacity ≈ 3.8 L (4.0 US qt) routine drain-and-refill; 4.1 L (4.3 US qt, 3.6 Imp qt) total system after disassembly. See Cooling System.
Type Silicate-free ethylene-glycol antifreeze, aluminum-safe (Honda Type 2 / HP coolant pre-mix is ideal)
Mixture 50/50 with distilled water. Never use tap water.
Interval Every 2 years (manual: 24 mo / 24,000 km (16,000 mi))
  • Silicates score the ceramic water-pump seal, which causes weep-hole leaks. Don't use "universal" green coolant.
  • Don't mix chemistries. Flush when switching brands/colors.

2.3 Final-drive gear oil

Item Spec
Capacity 140 cm³ / 0.14 L (4.7 US oz)
Type Hypoid gear oil, API GL-5, SAE 80 ⚠️ grade per long-standing GL1500 spec; owners commonly use 80W-90 or synthetic 75W-90. GL-5 only, never GL-4.
Fill level To the lower edge of the fill hole, bike upright
Interval First at 18,000 km (12,000 mi) / 18 mo, then every 24,000 km (16,000 mi) / 24 mo
Drain bolt torque 20 N·m (14 ft·lb) ⚠️ (one source gives 12 N·m / 9 ft·lb). See Final Drive.

2.4 Brake & clutch fluid

Item Spec
Type DOT 4 (Honda DOT 4 or equivalent) for both the linked brakes and the hydraulic clutch
Never use DOT 5 (silicone). It is incompatible with the seals.
Quantity to buy ⚠️ 1 L (≈ 34 US oz) is enough for a full LBS flush plus the clutch, with spare. The linked system has more lines than a normal bike.
Interval Every 2 years. Many owners do the clutch yearly because the slave collects moisture.

DOT 4 is hygroscopic. Buy small sealed bottles and discard opened leftovers. It strips paint and damages plastics.

2.5 Fork oil

Item Spec
Capacity (2000, single-spring fork) ⚠️ Left 372 cm³ (12.6 US oz) / Right 377 cm³ (12.7 US oz). The widely-quoted 320/325 cm³ figures are for the early 1988–94 fork.
Type 10W fork oil: Pro Honda SS-8 or equivalent (15W for firmer damping)
Quantity to buy 1 L (≈ 34 US oz)
Interval ⚠️ Not on the Honda schedule. Common practice is every ~2 years / 24,000 km (16,000 mi), and always with seals.

Drain the anti-dive units too. Old oil hides there. See Front Suspension.

2.6 Greases & pastes

Product Where Interval
Honda M-77 Moly Paste, P/N 08798-9010 (supersedes Moly 60) Driveshaft splines, pinion-joint splines, final-drive/wheel splines. 5-pin flange: do NOT grease the pins. Every rear-tire change (Honda TSB)
Lithium grease, GC-LB type Steering-head bearings When repacking / replacing bearings
Silicone / brake grease (rubber-safe) Caliper slide pins, pad pins (sparingly), master-cylinder pivot Each pad change
Multipurpose grease Side-stand and center-stand pivots, brake-pedal and shift-lever pivots, cable ends Every major service

2.7 Battery water (flooded battery only)

The factory battery is a flooded type. Top up with distilled water between the UPPER/LOWER marks at every inspection. AGM batteries need no electrolyte service. See §8.3.

3. Filters

3.1 Engine oil filter

Item Value
OEM (original) 15410-MM9-003 ("tall" style; 15410-MM9-013 also seen)
OEM (current) 15410-MFJ-D02 (supersedes 15410-MFJ-D01; shared GL1500/GL1800/Valkyrie)
Aftermarket ⚠️ HiFlo HF204 / K&N KN-204 (MFJ-D01 size); HiFlo HF303 / K&N KN-303 (MM9 size). Confirm clearance on your bike.
Torque 10 N·m (7 ft·lb), oiled gasket
Interval Every oil change

Location: inside the lower right cowl, behind the front wheel.

3.2 Air filters

The GL1500 has three air filters. The two small foam ones are the "forgotten filters". They crumble with age and the debris goes into the carbs or the cruise solenoids.

Filter Honda P/N Aftermarket Interval
Main air cleaner element 17205-MN5-003 (⚠️ 17205-MN5-013 on some catalogs) K&N HA-8088 (washable), Emgo, Hiflo 12 mo / 12,000 km (8,000 mi); sooner in dust/wet
Sub-air filter (secondary air / air-injection) 17253-KT8-000 ⚠️ forum-sourced — Change with the main element ⚠️
Cruise-control air filter 36532-MN5-005 ⚠️ single-source — Schedule: "cruise control valve element", replace at 24 mo / 24,000 km (16,000 mi)
  • The main element sits under the radio shelf. See DIY Procedures §8.
  • The two small filters are reached via the lower cowls and a fairing pocket. They cost a few dollars each, so do them together.

3.3 Fuel filter

Item Value
Inline fuel filter 16900-MG8-003
Interval ⚠️ Not printed on the owner's-manual schedule. Replace at 24,000 km (16,000 mi) / 2 years, or whenever fuel delivery is in question.

Replace hardened fuel hoses and clamps at the same time. Use submersible-rated hose where the line sits in fuel. See Fuel System §11.

3.4 Suspension air-compressor filter & desiccant

Item Value
Compressor intake foam filter ⚠️ No OEM P/N found. Owners cut medium-coarse foam (lawn-mower filter material) to size.
Desiccant (air dryer) ⚠️ No P/N found. Refresh the desiccant during a compressor rebuild.
Interval Schedule: clean at 12 mo, inspect the drier at each 6-month service. Treat as condition-based.

A crumbled foam filter is the classic cause of "compressor runs but won't pump". See Rear Suspension & Air System.

4. Ignition

Item Value
Spark plugs (×6) NGK DPR7EA-9 / ND X22EPR-U9 (standard)
Cold climate below 5 °C (41 °F) NGK DPR6EA-9 / ND X20EPR-U9
Sustained high speed NGK DPR8EA-9 / ND X24EPR-U9
Gap 0.8–0.9 mm (0.031–0.036 in)
Install New plug: hand-tight + ½ turn. ⚠️ Torque wrench: 12–15 N·m (9–11 ft·lb).
Interval 12 mo / 12,000 km (8,000 mi)
Plug caps (condition-based) Honda 30700-KE2-942 ⚠️ (5 kΩ resistor). Replace if cracked or out of resistance spec.

See Ignition System.

5. Timing Belts

The flat-six is an interference engine. A failed belt bends valves. Belts age-harden, so time matters more than mileage.

Item Value
Timing belt (×2) Honda 14401-MN5-004 ⚠️ verify supersession
Aftermarket Gates T275; NAPA 25-250275 ⚠️; Goodyear 40275 ⚠️
Tensioner adjuster (×2, optional) Honda 14510-MG9-008 ⚠️. Owners often rebuild or just fit new springs.
Honda interval Inspect at ~39,000 km (24,000 mi); replace at 160,000 km (100,000 mi)
Recommended interval 80,000–120,000 km (50,000–75,000 mi) or 6–8 years, whichever first
Deflection ⚠️ 5–7 mm (0.2–0.28 in) on the long span

Always replace both belts. Bundle the coolant change and spark plugs with the job, since the bodywork is already off. See Engine and Maintenance Schedule.

6. Seals, Gaskets & Washers

6.1 Crush / sealing washers

Replace these every time the fastener is removed. A flattened washer leaks, and tightening harder doesn't fix it.

Location Part / size Qty Torque
