  • The E39 platform: the fourth-generation 5 Series is considered a high-water mark for BMW's "ultimate driving machine" ethos — fully independent suspension (double-pivot strut front, multilink integral rear), hydraulic power steering with genuine road feel, and a rigidity-to-weight ratio that was class-leading at launch.
